Why Dance Cardio is the Best Workout, Full Stop

Cardio Flashdance® Paris — Why Dance Cardio is the Best Workout, Full Stop

As Seen in Vogue France  ·  By Cardio Flashdance®  ·  Paris, March 2026

Here is our controversial opinion: the best workout in the world is not the most punishing one. It is not the one that requires a six-week commitment, a foam roller, and a complicated relationship with your own legs on the stairs the next morning.

The best workout is the one you actually show up for. Week after week, because you genuinely want to — not because the guilt of skipping is louder than the voice telling you to stay on the sofa.

We are a dance cardio brand, so yes — we have a dog in this race. But we also have years of watching women walk into our classes having tried everything else, and we have seen what happens when they find something that finally sticks. Cardio Flashdance® sticks. Here is why.

The Facts

  • 400–600 calories burned per 60-minute aerobic dance session — the same as a moderate run, except Madonna is playing and nobody is watching your split times. (Source: Fitness Blender, Calories Burned Dancing)

  • Music increases dopamine release during exercise, reduces perceived exertion, and improves endurance — effects that are measurably stronger when movement is synchronised to the beat. (Source: Frontiers in Physiology, 2024)

  • Group dance fitness consistently outperforms gym-based cardio for long-term adherence — researchers attribute this to the combination of music, social connection, and enjoyment as primary motivators. (Source: PMC: Dance Fitness Classes Improve Health-Related Quality of Life, 2020)

Five Reasons Dance Cardio Actually Works

1. You're too busy having fun to notice you're working out

When you're concentrating on choreography — trying to nail the grapevine, remember which direction the turn goes on the next count, keep up with the arm sequence without accidentally hitting the person next to you — your brain simply does not have the bandwidth left over to think about how tired your legs are. Sessions consistently feel shorter than they are. You look up and an hour has gone. This is not a happy accident. It is the whole design.

2. The music is not background — it IS the workout

There is real research showing that the right music increases endurance, reduces perceived effort, and lifts mood in ways that are genuinely measurable. Most exercise uses music as wallpaper. Dance cardio is built entirely around it — the moves are timed to it, shaped by it, emotionally connected to it. A Blondie track in a CF® class — actually moving your body to the beat with a room full of people — is a completely different experience to hearing that same track in a gym. Our bodies know the difference. They have always known.

(Our current playlist includes Madonna, Tears for Fears, Talking Heads, Prince, Queen, Blondie, The Weather Girls... the list goes on. You are welcome.)

3. Low-impact does not mean low-effort (your joints will thank you)

80s-inspired aerobics is predominantly low-impact movement — lateral steps, arm sequences, hip isolations, and controlled footwork that keeps you close to the ground. This means your joints are very happy with the whole arrangement, while your cardiovascular system barely notices the distinction from higher-impact exercise. It makes dance cardio genuinely accessible for all ages, all abilities, and all confidence levels — whether you're recovering from an injury, returning after a long break, or simply someone who has decided that exercise should not feel like punishment. (It should not. It never should.)

4. You cannot be lonely in a room full of people doing the wrong moves together

Do you enjoy music? Do you fancy a dance party? Then this part is for you. The community piece of dance cardio is something that genuinely surprises people — the warmth in the room, the shared experience of learning the same slightly chaotic shoulder roll, the moment someone catches your eye during the funky chicken section and you both lose it completely. People in our Paris studio consistently tell us that the community is the reason they came back after their first class. Not the workout. Not even the playlist. The other people in the room. That is something most exercise formats simply cannot create.

5. Joy is a legitimate fitness outcome — actually, it's the best one

The fitness industry has spent years telling people that exercise is supposed to be hard and uncomfortable, and that enjoying it means it probably doesn't count. We reject this entirely. Joy is not the consolation prize for people who cannot do "real" exercise. It is the most powerful fitness outcome there is — because it is what keeps you coming back. Not for a month. Not until the new year enthusiasm wears off. For years. You will walk away from every Cardio Flashdance® class feeling fantastic — stronger, lighter, genuinely glad you came. That is not incidental. That is the entire point.

The 80s Were Onto Something — And We're Keeping It Alive

The original aerobics movement was, at its core, a party with cardiovascular benefits attached. People gathering in bright rooms, moving to music that made them feel powerful and joyful, in clothes that made them feel like the best version of themselves. The health outcomes were real — strength, cardiovascular fitness, stress reduction, better sleep. But they were almost beside the point compared to the experience of actually being there.

Somewhere along the way fitness became austere and serious and something you endured. We think that was a mistake. Cardio Flashdance® is our correction to that mistake — a room with great music, brilliant people, and the understanding that sweating while singing along to Blondie is a completely valid way to take care of yourself.

The 80s got this right. We are just making sure it is not forgotten. 💃
